Beijinhos (little kisses)

Portuguese culture:
Something i love about the portuguese culture is beijinhos. (little kisses) Every time we greet someone, we give kisses on the cheeks. it is so great because it is an expression of love and respect for the people with whom we meet. Even strangers that we don´t know, after teaching them a small lesson, or a conversa at the door, it´s beijinhos.

This past week has been better, but it was a rough week. Irmã Perkins has been sick this whole transfer with a cough and finally it took a toll on her, so last night she stayed with the senior couple who are serving ehr in the centro dos Jovens Adultos (YSA). Guess what dad Elder McConkie is brothers with Joseph McConkie!!  I had a feeling and i finally asked him.  He said that he and two of his brothers were all bishops at that same time when Joseph McConkie was your bishop! small world huh!
Irma Fontes and i taught some lessons last night while irma perkins was resting. we met a family who is from ghana! the brother told us that he was baptized here 6 years ago!!  the lesson was in half english half portuguese.  We also passed by the house of Patricia and family (the recent converts who just moved to our area) they had a friend visiting and he had a lot of questions because he has been doubting recently if God really exists. It was neat to hear the testimonies of the two boys sharing with their friend. They said that they used to be just like their friend until the elders met them and helped them see that God really does exist and He hears and answers our prayers.  Mosiah 4:9
We began teaching Neia, who we met on the street 2 weeks ago. She has a son who´s 3 yrs old and her friend Delila also lives with her. They both are really interested in learning more, we ahve passed by a few times this past week and I want to share one experience we had with them.  We left 3 Nefi 11 for them to read, adn when we returned Neia had read some but Delila hadn´t so we read a little bit together. WE talked about the part where Jesus Christ visited the americas and how He invited every person, one by one to come unto Him and feel His hands and feet.  I felt the spirit testify in my heart that this really is true. He is calling each of God´s children to come individually. We are here as missionaries to invite each person to come unto the Savior individually. He loves us every one.  I am so grateful for the Love that the Savior has for each of us.
Sunday was a day at church really interesting. We got a new bishop. Neia was there but didn´t understand very much of what was going on as the transition was made of bishops, but she enjoyed the other classes.  Sara Coelho who was baptized with her daughter Diana 2 weeks ago received the dom do Espirito Santo and also Lusianne who was baptized back in July finally received the Holy Ghost! She has been having some really hard problems at home with her husband and he has not let her come to church. SHe almost didn´t make it this week as well, but we told her to just take a taxi from her house (she lives really far) so she did and arrived right in time! she is so amazing! she has a testimony so strong and she was so happy to finally receive the gift of the holy ghost!!

Eu sei que vive meu Senhor!

Eu amo vocês!!

BOA TARDE

Boa tarde!!
I had a really neat experience on sunday morning... we arrived at church with a recent convert, then Irmã Perkins and I left again during relief society to meet an investigator and a menos ativo at the bus stop, Nilza and Graciete.  They are sisters and Graciete was baptized some 11 years ago in cabo verde. When she arrived here about 3 years ago, she stopped going to church because she never found the capela.  Now they live together in our area with their 8 children, all boys!! Graciete has 3 and Nilza has 5!!  Let me explain about them real fast then the experience on sunday...
We found them through Patricia who was baptized the first week i got here, in the elders ward then she and her family moved to our area. I don´t remember if i told you this already, but that first saturday we helped patricia and her family unpack that day, then at night we went with here to pass out invites to her baptism the next day. WHen we arrived at this house, Graciete explained that she is already a member, and that everyone was baptized except for Nilza because she didn´t want to be. Anyway, so we have passed by this house a few times since then. Earlier this week, we passed and prayed with some of the rapazes (boys) and Graciete. We felt that the boy who was visiting, Rubens(16) has potential so we got his information and then planned to go by his house later in the week.  After leaving the house we were in the street saying a prayer when we saw Rubens pass by. After he passed we saw that he was going to get on the bus, so we followed him onto the bus (we tried to make it smooth so it didn´t appear like we were stocking him ) and we talked to him more, trying to find out more information about him. He said that he thinks that his mom was already baptized and maybe his sister!!! We then got off the bus, and we were laughing about our experience. It probably doesn´t make much sense, but anyway... we passed by later in the week, but never found him at home. Finally, we met his sister, and she said that yes here mom is a member, and that she has been meeting with the elders at her friends house, but in another area that we don´t know... We are still in the process to find out the whole story and start teaching Rubens.  We are excited about this because we really want to teach families!!
Okay that was kind of a tangent but here is what happened on Sunday morning... so Irma Perkins and I left the capela to meet Nilza and Graciete, but we left our bags in the capela, we only had our cell phone (which by the way is super high-tech! it has gps!)  So we found Nilza and Graciete, greeted them and then I saw this man from the corner of my eye and felt i should go invite his to church. ( Before church we saw this lady that we also had invited, she never showed up)  I introduced myself and invited him to church. He said he was here in this area to do some things and didn´t have much time, but i insisted and invited him to at least see where the capela is. Because i didn´t have any pamphlets with me, i asked Nilza if i could have hers, and I gave it to the man. His name is Tomé (thomas).  He agreed to at least see the capela.  I talked with him a little about religion and he said basically that he believes in God and Jesus but is tired of all the religions that just talk against others.  As we talked and walked to the capela, i could tell that he is in a sensitive phase in his life. He said he has some knowledge about God and Jesus but he is a ´baby´ and the baby starts to crawl. As an adult-baby it is more difficult to make changes but he is willing to at least see, and learn a little.  When we arrived in the capela, RS and Priesthood had just ended.  Some of the bretheren greeted Tomé and one member in particular, Raynerson, basically just embraced him and took him under his wing to show him the way to Sunday School, it was so awesome!!!!!  He ended up staying until after sunday school, we talked about the ordinance of baptism, and he had really good questions, and then stayed for part of sacrament meeting. We gave him a book of mormon and said that we would pass on his contact to the elders.
Now why did I share this experience, well, i just felt this great love for him. He is an elect who really just wants to find the truth!! There are so many people like him and i know there are people who live in our area like him!  And i was amazed/humbled/really grateful that the Holy Ghost whispered to me to talk to him. It is so important to follow the whisperings of the Holy Ghost because they will guide us to the elect!  This is why i am here, to help others find the truth that they so desparately need and are searching for!
This was a week that was menos bom. Well, it took me until Sunday to reacognize that i just need to follow when the spirit whispers!!
We had an amazing zone conference on tuesday with our zone- porto and porto north zone with President Torgan, Irmã Torgan and the assistents.  It was a really amazing meeting!!  The talked a lot about love. How really this is the root of everything that we do. we need to show our love for our companions, the members, our pesquisadores, and wiht everyone!!!  During the meeting, i reflected on my mission and how love is probably the thing that is hardest for me to show. I have been struggling with this so much. And still, after our conference, during the week i failed to apply it in our teaching. Love and patience are two things that i am trying to understand but little by little it grows.
Also, President talked about the importance of obedience. He talked about how with every commandment there is a blessing, and really the Lord just wants to bless us but we ahve to do our part in order to receive the blessings. THis week i thought a lot about how i have been so blessed to be part of the gospel my whole life. It is a thing that i have taked for granted so much!!  Irmã Torgan talked about how we as missionaries need to open our hearts to have the holy ghost with us, and then we need to help our investigators open their hearts too so that they can be converted.
I have been studying a little about this - the power of the holy ghost in the conversion process.  Really our purpose as missionaries is to invite others to feel the holy ghost. and as we teach truths, the spirit will be present. and they have the opportunity to accept or reject.  I am just beginning to understand this process, but better late than never right :)  I am so grateful for the atonement of Jesus Christ that He suffered for me and that if  i repent He will heal me. He understands the situation of every single person on the earth. He and the Father appeared to Joseph Smith, and through Joseph Smith, we have the fulness of the gospel on the earth again!! What a marvelous blessing!!!

I love you all!!
Have a great week!!

PS mom thanks for the talk and the package!! It arrived today.
Also, i might buy new shoes today... these ones are about worn out... :) also Irmã Fontes doesn´t have any money... we´re gonna talk to President about money, but she might need new shoes too so i might just pay for hers too.

Irmã Perkins is from Utah but grew up in China and Taiwan and Hong Kong. Her dad was a mission president and now is part of the presidency of the 70 over the area of asia! SHe is super awesome and is teaching me about confidence in the Lord.  it is really crazy being the senior comp today i had a little break down but it´s all good. Trust in the Lord and Go and Do!!

I am understanding

Mom!!!   I love you!!!  Thank you for this email. Something is starting to change within me. I feel purpose here in Portugal.  I am doing my best every day, but something has been changing recently. things are clicking finally in many aspects. I am so grateful for the atonement of Jesus Christ. I have started praying to better understand, and just express gratitude for the atonement.  Sometimes, but rarely, change is de repent... rapido, quick... but most times it is through the process that the change starts to occur. I have been searching throughout my whole mission to see the rapid magical change that i think i always imagined just happens in missionaries.  But, it doesn´t work that way. i am grateful that finally i really am beginning to understand that i really have been learning all along the way. In the beginning, i was so full of pride, so full of pride. But through various experiences, i have been compelled to be humble, and sometimes i have remebered to be humble. THis mission is just like every one said, too hard to describe with words. I am so grateful that i am here. thank you for your constant love and support, and prayers.  i feel your love always.  I had a dream last night with family members :)  i am so grateful that we are an eternal family!!
Talk about not having any time to rest dad!!! :) you will be so great in your callings! Thank you for your example to keep moving forward! now you get to participate in preparing the young men to transition to YSA!!  :)  wow!
crazy too about 11\9\11  ten years!!!  feels like yesterday!
That picture of ellen is super super foxy!!! she really is growing up!!!!!

One more thing- my companion Irmã Fontes is from Cabo Verde, a very humble country. she doesn´t have much materialy, financially, but her testimony is so powerful!!!  she is an incredible missionary and i am learning so much with her!!!

okay now i will write about the week... até ja!

Amazing Grace

I don´t know this song in Portuguese and i don't know it well in English, but i read an email that Aunt Bunny forwarded to me and a missionary named grace shared some thoughts that touched me about Grace. Mom could you find the talk by brad Wilcox His grace is sufficient` or something like that and send it to me. I read the news first from Russell about dad. strange, well not at all, but about 2 days ago i said something about dad being in the branch or maybe it was just a thought, but anyway, the question popped into my mind, is he still in the presidency? then the thought went away. then today, when i read it, i thought back to that experience... anyway it is so amazing how the holy ghost prepares us in all things. Dad, thank you for your service. I know that the branch kids all love you. thank you for your example in all things. Ellen also shared some news; I know that God has a plan for each of His children, and through His grace, all things will work out! Okay, well i am here in Porto!!!!! Here´s kind of how the week went: I arrived in Porto Monday night, and emailed Tuesday morning. Then Tuesday we visited a family that are members who really really have the desire to be instruments in the hands of God to share the gospel with their friends. we are excited to work with this family. WE don't have water in our house so we stayed the night at the casal McConkie again. (they are the senior couple in charge of the young adult center that is held in our chapel. PS it is really neat because it is like the centro that i went to when i lived in Vienna... I always wanted to be a missionary in a jas (YSA) center, and now i am here!! Wednesday, We visited some people, a recent convert who ended up going to the temple to do baptisms this past weekend!! yeah! that is what it is all about!! then~at night i got back on a bus to go back to Lisboa. i stayed with the casal forbush and in the morning we had training with our new companions!!! it was similar to the other one last transfer, but President talked a lot about the war that we are in, and the war that happened in heaven. It was not a war of swords, but of testimonies. That is what we are fighting for now. our testimonies are what will save us. I am grateful for the years of building my testimony so that i can be here now fighting for the salvation of souls. My new companion is Irmã Fontes she is straight from the island of Fogo that is part of Cabo Verde. She has been waiting for her visa to go to the MTC in Madrid but still hasn't received it so she will be here with us until November then go to the MTC. This also happened with some elders, who were trained by the assistants then went to the MTC. She is so AWESOME!!!! She just so excited to be here as a missionary and has such a strong testimony! she has been a member almost 4 years. We returned Thursday night from Lisboa, and began to work!! oh, we didn't have water in our house until Saturday... adventure, but i kept thinking of Jacob whose situation is way harder!! Super cool story: the elders have been teaching this family the mom, and 2 sons were baptized last week. they moved to our area on Friday and Saturday we and the elders helped unpack a lots of stuff. The sister, Patricia was baptized yesterday!! we went to the baptism with some pesquisadores who live in our area, and we will begin working with this family to help them make the transition to this ward and the process of conversion. we helped pass out convites to the baptism to this family, 2 sisters and their 7 kids (all boys) who, we found out, already have had tons of contact with the missionaries in Cabo Verde before coming here... the one sister was baptized like 8 years ago, but when she moved here, she stopped because she never found the church. IT is really neat because we had no idea that this family already has been prepared by the lord! We´ll baptize them!!! :) This is something i am seeing so often. the miracles of how the lord and His angels prepare the people, we just have to help them recognize that they are already prepared and invite them to make covenants with the Lord. I lust want to express my love for the Lord and my love for my family. Thank you for supporting me in everything that I do. I am only in the beginning of the rest of my life, and starting to understand a little better the great love that God has for each of us. He sent His Son to save us because he loves us. Also, He restored the gospel to the earth because He loves us. Go forth and serve! Perfect love casteth out all fear! xoxo Irmã Michael
